The Beauty Bar Denver is serving up a new style of “permanent” once a month with its feature of Ladies Laugh-In, a comedy show run by women, featuring mostly women comedians, but to be enjoyed by all. Known for it’s Martini & Manicure happy hours, The Beauty Bar Denver is the perfect spot for chicks to go get a cocktail and a giggle while gossiping with in-house nail stylists, and listening to some good time comedy which spans the topic realm from Menopause to texting & driving to softball legs.
With a majority lineup of females, as the title suggests, this event is more than welcoming to dudes too. Last weeks event featured 4 women and 3 guys, mostly local, including a couple performers from the Comedy Works New Faces Contest. The event is organized and run by local blogger and funny girl, Heather Snow, who often performs at the event herself while her sister from another mister, Local Americana singer/songwriter, Chella Negro, plays host to the crowd throwing in a few zingers between each new standup.
Snow started Ladies Laugh-In for many reasons. “There weren’t very many shows that didn’t follow the format of 6 token guys and 1 or 2 girls. If a girl went up at open mic, it was almost guaranteed that we wouldn’t be up for a while, and at those open mics, we often had to go super dirty, thinking that it would be funnier. This is no longer the case in Denver, and I’d like to think that Ladies Laugh-In has something to do with it.” When asked where she sees the future of female comedy in Denver she said, “There are so many emerging female comics in this city that are just getting started. The show at Beauty Bar is a way for them to practice performing in front of a crowd that’s different from any other in town.” However she warns that this is not for first time performers, which you could gauge by the quality of jokes and showmanship.
No subject seems off limits as the scene lightens up to the tune of pubic hairdos, medical marijuana, bitter break ups, man-scaping a 6’5″ dude, yoga queefing, and a rot of talk about Asians. The Ladies keep it rolling for about two hours with each comedian taking longer set times as the night goes on. They do it every third Thursday of the month, entry is free, and The Beauty Bar extends there happy hour and manicure specials until the end of the show. So whether you’re looking for a solid girls night out destination or just a good chuckle to get you over that douchebag boyfriend of yours, stop in for a martini and see some funny ladies yucking it up.
