First off, I'm kind of a pizza snob. Let me start by saying that I'm from Illinois, home of the Chicago style pizza (not to be confused with NY style). I will admit that NY style pizza is doubt more popular here in Denver than Chi town, but you know, NY style is popular all over the world! Check out my fav spots before choosing your staple.

NY Style Pizza in Denver

Yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus! Yes Virginia, there really is some good pizza to be found in Denver. First, we'll start with everyone's favorite NY style places in the order of importance (not necessarily taste):

1. Anthonys Pizza

Sloppy, slappy, flappy, dirty, the whole bit. Real NY style pizza. Not the best tasting pizza in town, but absolutely the number one place locals go when they think of NY style. I prefer others but definitely visit Anthonys by Denver University at least 10 times a year. Has a high gas bubble factor. Taste grade: B- Hangout grade: A

2. Two Fisted Marios

This place has to be mentioned number two because it's very very good pizza and is located downtown. Business people can go for lunch and you can drink a couple beers here before a baseball game. Taste grade: A- Hangout grade: B

3. Famous Pizza

The location just south of downtown on Broadway is my favorite place. Not as messy as Anthony's and more divey than Two Fisted Marios. This place is exactly what you want. Good pizza and an eating area, period. Taste grade: A Hangout grade: C+

Special Mention: Abo's Pizza

This pizza place is great too and many prefer it over Anthonys as they are similar. The greasy factor makes it similar to Anthonys but they use a slightly different meat. Abos is not the hangout that Anthonys is, but somehow you feel like you get a higher quality pizza. Has a high gas factor. Taste grade: B Hangout grade: C-

Special Mention: Beau Jo's Pizza

This isn't NY style pizza, but a mountain pizza. Since many Denver locals admire this pizza, it had to be mentioned. You'll no doubt need a nap after some of their thick 'pie' pizza and some of their microbrews. Taste grade: C+ Hangout grade: B+ X-Factor: B+ (go there after skiiing/boarding and you'll see what I mean)

Special Mention: Papa Murphys

This take and bake pizza isn't NY style either, but they do provide a really awesome pizza you can pick up and cook at home. Taste grade: B Hangout grade: N/A

Special Mention: Little Riccis

Had to throw this one in there simply because it's one of the only decent pizzas you can get in the west suburbs. Taste grade: B Hangout grade: C

Franchise Ranking For Denver

1. Pizza Hut (lots of locations)
2. Dominoes (better selection all the time)
3. Papa Johns (great dipping butter sauces)
4. BlackJack Pizza (super cheap but has a high gas bubble factor)

If you're lazy, order a franchise pizza. Otherwise, check out the smaller joints listed above. If you feel I'm missing a place, plead your case and I'll reconsider.
